Committees

Current Committees:

Steering Committee

Committee works to plan general meetings and set agendas for the council. All meetings are open. Committee must have at least three Voting Members, but all membership categories are invited to participate.

Land Use Committee

The land use subcommittee will be responsible for developing policies that address existing barriers to urban food production, either for personal or commercial purposes. Land tenure is one of the biggest challenges facing urban farmers around the world, and therefore this committee will focus first on finding suitable land for local growers. The next focus area will be to work with city agencies to find viable solutions for accessing water. The costs associated with adding a water line can be prohibitive for individual growers, and relying on other water sources (i.e. a neighbor’s house) is not conducive for long-term production.

Resarch & Education Committee

The Research & Education Committee is focused on producing and encouraging research about the local food system so that we can better understand the strengths and challenges we face. As a grassroots organization it is important to identify partners with research expertise and to assist them in pursuing research projects relevant to the food system. The Lincoln-Lancaster FPC can also identify gaps in existing research and work through this committee to share those research needs to the excellent network of researchers working in our community. The first charge of this committee will be finalizing and disseminating the community food assessment report. The committee can use that report to inform their discussion of next steps.

Outreach Committee

Community Outreach Committee will focus on educating the public about what the Food Policy Council is doing-- including press conferences and social media. This committee want to reach out the public and keep the public engaged and aware of our actions. Most importantly, educating the public to raise awareness of our strengths and weaknesses in food system.
